BizPlanPlus didn’t start out as a business concept…it evolved from a periodic desire on my part to help a few friends and acquaintances to prepare their business plans for an array of commercial interests. I drew on my past work as a strategic planner for earlier telecommunications and high technology employers in Canada and California. My more recent local experience while based in Bali was refreshing and I eventually turned it into this newly launched business…and, yes, I have a created my own business plan too.
The Reluctant Planner
The interesting thing about business plans is although every entrepreneur and company needs one, either to get start-up funding, to better direct an existing company, and several other good business reasons, it’s like going to the dentist for regular cleaning or annual check-up with your doctor…most people are reluctant to do it. Honestly, if you did a survey of which businesses in your area have a business plan you’d probably be shocked to know that less than 10% of them have a formal planning process or business plan. Most businesses, especially SMEs, are run on owner and management intuition with little forward planning to help direct present business activities by shooting from the hip…in ‘ready-fire-aim’ fashion.
This suggests a sizeable opportunity for me since I enjoy helping people prepare business plans. It’s a huge untapped market spanning very industry and business classification, but business plan clients must see sufficient benefit to motivate them to spend the time and money to get the job done. Over the next few blogs I intend to help with this.
